Reconstruction of “Apadana” and “The gate of all nations” in Persepolis (Iran)

Abstract

Persepolis was the capital of the Persian Empire during the Achaemenid dynasty in 500 BC. It is remarkable complex of palaces. Its pillars with 15m height and its gigantic statues make this place unique and spectacular. Persepolis was burnt by Alexander in 331 BC. Today there are a few pillars existing in Persepolis and some of its statues can be only found in museums around the world. The aim of this project is producing an accurate virtual environment of Apadana and The gate of all nations which are two historical buildings of Persepolis. According to archeological researches it will be trying to reconstruct textures and models of Persepolis as near as possible to the original one in that era. Users can go through this virtual environment and they can interact with it. This project provides an opportunity for its users to visit and get information about this ancient impressive city.

Target Audience

20-40 years old.

Goal

The purpose of this project is reconstructing Apadana and The gate of all nations as accurate as possible to their original in 2500 years ago. This application allows users to visit these spectacular ancient buildings from near and learn about them.

Nowadays Persepolis is a ruined city and most of its statues are in museums and they do not exist in their original places. Reconstruction of Persepolis is the only way that allows people to visit this place again. Since physical reconstruction costs too much and using media such as movie or still image cannot give the feeling like presenting in the place so virtual reality would be the best solution for this problem. Immersion is one of the advantages of virtual reality application in which audiences can have a unique experience. In addition users from any places in the world can have an economical journey to Persepolis by using virtual reality application.

Persepolis is reconstructed before for a few times for 3D short movies and still images but it seems there is not any high quality virtual reality application for this place.
